Healthy eating 'could be cause of acne'

Healthy eating could be the true cause of teenage pimples, according to
scientists who believe bread and cereals - not chocolate or fry-ups - cause
adolescent acne.

The ease with which highly processed foods, such as breads and cereals, are
digested causes a surge of blood sugars, which in turn causes a rise in
male hormone levels, the scientists believe.

The male hormones encourage pores in the skin to ooze large amounts of
sebum, the greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Loren
Cordain, an evolutionary biologist who led the research at Colorado State
University, said processed foods also boosted a hormone called insulin-like
growth factor, which encouraged skin cells called keratinocytes to
multiply, a hallmark of acne.

The theory, published in New Scientist, will be tested by an Australian
team that plans to put 60 boys on a three-month trial diet.
