"The government's widening crackdown on prescription-drug abuse is
having an unintended consequence: It's making it tougher for people
with chronic pain to get treatment. ... Patients with chronic pain
say the government initiatives are making it harder for them to get
the painkillers they need to battle conditions such as arthritis and
cancer. The crackdown is making doctors more reluctant to prescribe
some drugs out of fear they will attract attention from regulators.
Doctors are also getting more vigilant. One Tennessee doctor turned
in a patient he believed wasn't actually taking a prescription
painkiller. The arrest took place in the doctor's office." (03/20/04)

Woman's gun may have saved her life
Oakland Daily Press
"Four years ago, she was helpless as a man robbed her at gunpoint. On
Friday, legally armed with a handgun, she may have saved her life.
And Farmington Hills [MI] Police Chief William Dwyer, who dreaded a
change in the law in 2001 to make it easier to receive a concealed
weapons permit, admits that he's changing his mind about that law.
Dwyer said the woman could easily have been killed after she was
targeted by a couple looking for an easy score." (03/20/04)

New deaf signs: Limp wrists and slant eyes must go

"Political correctness has caught up with sign language for deaf
people. Gestures used to depict ethnic and religious minorities and
homosexuals are being dropped because they are now deemed offensive.
The abandoned signs include 'Jewish,' in which a hand mimes a hooked
nose; the sign for 'gay,' a flick of a limp wrist; and 'Chinese,' in
which the index fingertips pull the eyes into a slant. Another
dropped sign is that for 'Indian,' which is a finger pointing to an
imaginary spot in the middle of a forehead." (03/21/04)

Canada plans pilot marijuana project

"Canada plans to make government-certified marijuana available in
local pharmacies, a move that would make it only the second country
in the world to allow the direct sale of medical marijuana. Officials
are organizing a pilot project in the British Columbia province
