"Antigua and Barbuda, the Caribbean island nation, won a World Trade
Organization ruling that U.S. legislation criminalizing online
betting runs counter to international law. According to a
confidential ruling to the two countries today, Antigua, with a
population of 68,000, won a complaint that a U.S. ban on Internet
gaming violates WTO accords on commercial services. The U.S. ban has
slashed revenue in Antigua, which developed online gambling to boost
an economy whose main income, tourism, suffered after a series of

6) One vote decides Libertarian primary

"Three weeks after the polls closed, there is apparently a one-vote
winner in a seesaw battle to pick a Libertarian candidate to run for
a Silicon Valley [CA] state Senate seat in the November general
election.Software engineer Michael Laursen received 285 votes in the
Libertarian primary, while his opponent, John Webster, garnered 284,
according to the Santa Clara County registrar of voters. The race
drew attention because of Webster's view that children should be
allowed to have sex with adults, and his sex-related felony
conviction in 1990. ... Webster was ahead by one vote on election
night, but Laursen later pulled ahead." (03/24/04)

Cynical electorate is uninterested in political process

"Politics is on the verge of becoming a minority interest, the [UK]
Electoral Commission warned yesterday. Its audit of political
engagement paints a bleak picture of a nation with little political
interest, knowledge or satisfaction. Its poll, conducted by Mori,
found that political apathy is so extreme that only about half (51%)
of those questioned were certain to vote at the next election and
just 42% could name their MP. In findings that shocked pollsters,
interest was so low that only two out of five people (38%) had
discussed politics or political news in the past two to three years."
