"A U.S. aircraft fired on a house in the desert near the Syrian border
yesterday, and Iraqi officials said more than 40 people were killed,
including 15 children. U.S. military officials said the target was a
suspected safe house for foreign fighters from Syria, but Iraqis said
a helicopter had attacked a wedding party. Associated Press
Television News footage showed a truck containing bloodied bodies,
many wrapped in blankets, piled one on top of the other. Several were
children, one of whom was decapitated. The body of a girl who
appeared to be younger than 5 years old lay in a white sheet, her
legs riddled with wounds and her dress soaked in blood." (05/20/04)

Army may call up inactive reservists

"The U.S. Army is mustering soldiers for duty in Iraq wherever it can
find them, and that includes among people long considered off-limits.
The Army confirmed Tuesday that it pulled the files of 17,000 people
in the Individual Ready Reserve, the nation's pool of former
soldiers. ... The Individual Ready Reserve pool is composed of people
who completed their active-duty tours but are subject to involuntary
recall. A soldier who has served a 4-year enlistment in the Army, for
example, would remain in the pool for an additional 4 years. During
that time, he or she would receive no pay and would not drill with a
reserve or National Guard unit." (05/19/04)
