was, after all, the Porcupine Freedom Festival, a gathering of
libertarian-minded people who had no objections to the whirling,
whipping woman, as long as she didn't hurt anyone. She didn't, and

"In a pair of federal lawsuits to be filed on Wednesday, July 21,
researchers charge the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of
Health, and National Institute on Drug Abuse with obstructing medical
marijuana research in violation of federal law. ... On June 25, 2001,
Lyle Craker, Ph.D., director of the Medicinal Plant Program at the
University of Massachusetts Amherst, filed an application with the
DEA for approval to establish a facility that would produce marijuana
for U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved research. ... Three
years later, the DEA has yet to act on the UMass application."
