its former foe of backing terrorists who have begun to focus their
campaign of violence on the interim government itself. Hazim
al-Shaalan, the defence minister, denounced Iranian interference,
saying that Teheran was supporting foreign Islamic militants fighting
alongside remnants of the Saddam era to destabilise Iraq." (07/21/04)

UN to Israel: Tear down this wall

"The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution Tuesday
demanding that Israel comply with a world court decision and tear
down the barrier it is building to seal off the West Bank. A defiant
Israel vowed to continue construction. The 150-6 vote was opposed by
Israel and the United States, which argued that the resolution was
unbalanced. Ten countries abstained. The four other countries that
opposed the resolution were Australia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia
and Palau." (07/20/04)

"Virginians who exercise their right to carry guns in public have been
criticized -- even ridiculed -- in recent days by critics on the both
sides of the Potomac. But many gun rights advocates, state lawmakers
and residents point out that it's much safer to shop, drive or walk
along a street in Virginia than in the District, where handguns are
banned and police just declared a 'crime emergency.' 'Criminals don't
want to come up against somebody who is willing to protect
themselves,' said Philip Van Cleave, president of the gun rights
group Virginia Citizens Defense League. Van Cleave said Virginia also
is made safer by people who carry concealed weapons. 'The idea there
is the criminals don't know who's carrying a gun,' he said. 'They
don't wish to mess with people much because they don't know who will

San Francisco Chronicle
"Two women have accused Marin County [CA] jailers of strip-searching
them and leaving them nude in their cells after arrests for minor
crimes, the fourth such suit filed in a Northern California county.
The proposed class-action suit, filed last week in U.S. District
Court, follows similar complaints against San Francisco, San Mateo
and Sacramento counties, all alleging that strip-search policies
violated privacy guarantees in state law and the U.S. Constitution.
Sacramento County settled its suit for $15 million last month. A
federal judge has approved class-action status for the suit against
San Francisco, raising the possibility of a multimillion-dollar
verdict on behalf of thousands of inmates. The city has asked a
federal appeals court to review that ruling." (07/20/04)
