This is a message I sent to the Heads of the ABA Comittee on Employment Taxes, as a result of statements made at a May, 2004 meeting of the Committee.

I just read the newsletter and was shocked at the suggestion by Nina Olson, so-called IRS Taxpayer Advocate, that self-employed people don't pay their taxes. This is the same argument used by the IRS in the early '70's in their campaign to destroy IC's. The GAO said it wasn't true. Now they have figured out another way to rouse sympathy for their collection shortfalls and, also, to destroy IC's, not only as a concept but in fact. It does not surprise me that the Committee did not politely tell her to get lost but I think it should take a position solidly against the effort to obtain witholding on self-employed people. By the way that includes lawyers, doesn't it? Milton Friedman has said that the biggest mistake of his life was to obtain adoption of Taxation at Its Source.
