"The U.S. budget gap expanded to $412.55 billion in fiscal 2004,
marking the Bush administration?s second-straight record deficit, the
Treasury Department said on Thursday. Though the final 2004 figure
was the largest budget deficit in U.S. history, it was smaller than
the White House?s most recent forecast of a $445 billion shortfall
given in July and well below the $521 billion it foresaw early this

Washington reaches federal debt ceiling
Houston Chronicle
"The federal government reached its $7.4 trillion debt ceiling
Thursday, forcing Treasury Secretary John Snow to delay contributing
to one of the federal employees' pension systems to avoid running out
of cash and possibly defaulting on government debt. The situation
will probably prove temporary, as it has in the past. Congressional
leaders said that when they return for a lame-duck session after the
election, they will raise the debt ceiling to allow the government to
borrow the money it needs to pay its bills." (10/14/04)

Crude oil hugs milestone $55 mark

"Crude oil futures stayed within range of the $55 milestone Friday, a
day after a decline in the U.S. inventory of heating oil roiled a
market already on edge over tight supplies, high demand and unrest
among key producers. Oil for November delivery was at $54.61 Friday
afternoon in electronic trade in Asia - down $0.15 from its record
settlement price. In New York Thursday, a fourth straight week of
falls in U.S. distillate stocks just before the Northern Hemisphere
winter pushed crude up $1.12, or 2.1 percent - its eighth record high
in two weeks. Commercially available supplies of heating oil declined
by 1.2 million barrels for the week ending Oct. 8, falling to 50.0
million barrels, or 10 percent below year ago levels, the Energy
Department said in its weekly petroleum supply report." (10/15/04)
