I want to hear from some politician what he is NOT going to do for us

Bush using drugs to control depression, erratic behavior
    Capitol Hill Blue

"Although the exact drugs Bush takes to control his depression and
behavior are not known, White House sources say they are 'powerful
medications' designed to bring his erratic actions under control.
While Col. Tubb regularly releases a synopsis of the President's
annual physical, details of the President's health and any drugs or
treatment he may receive are not public record and are guarded
zealously by the secretive cadre of aides that surround the
President. Veteran White House watchers say the ability to control
information about Bush's health, either physical or mental, is
similar to Ronald Reagan's second term when aides managed to conceal
the President's increasing memory lapses that signaled the onslaught
of Alzheimer's Disease." (07/28/04)

Beijing threatens war with Taiwan
    BBC News [UK]

"A senior Chinese official has warned that Beijing may attack Taiwan
by 2008 if President Chen Shui-bian pursues his plans for
constitutional change. Mr Chen has insisted the planned amendments
are only concerned with local issues, but Beijing suspects he has a
pro-independence agenda. ... China sees Taiwan as a renegade province
which it has threatened to reunite by force if Taiwan declared
independence." (07/30/04)

5)  Hot second: Libertarians the new political center?
    PRWeb

"If the presidential election was held today, only three of one
hundred Americans would vote for Libertarian candidate Michael
Badnarik. But he's the second choice of more than four in 10.
According to a nationwide survey of 1,000 Americans conducted last
week by Rasmussen, Democratic challenger John Kerry (D-MA) leads
incumbent president George W. Bush by a slim margin of 46-43% --
within the 3% margin of error. However, when polled on their second
choice, 43% chose Badnarik rather than their first choice's main
rival." (07/30/04)

6)  Police arrest three, restore calm near FleetCenter
    Boston Herald

"Peaceful protest on Canal Street turned ugly with demonstrators
setting a fire and going toe-to-toe with billy club-toting cops in
the the first serious violence of the Democratic National Convention.
... The violence broke out when a rally of about 500 people wound
through downtown and stopped at the iron gates guarding the DNC
delegate entrance outside the Fleet Center on Canal Street. Police
allowed the group to gather in the street, rather than forcing them
into the protest pen. One group from the Save Our Civil Liberties
Campaign tied themselves to a bike rack while another group set a
small fire. The fights started after police moved in on a man
carrying a backpack allegedly containing a paper mache Molotov
cocktail. Pushing, shoving and panic ensued as protesters, cops and
bystanders ran amok. Sporadic scuffles broke out, including one that
started when a demonstrator took a police officer's hat." (07/29/04)

7)  Webmaster jailed under PATRIOT Act, released to halfway house
    San Francisco Bay View

"Political prisoner Sherman Austin, who made headlines last year after
being targeted as one of the first casualties of the infamous USA
PATRIOT Act, was released from the Federal Corrections Institute in
Tucson and left Arizona July 12 to return to Los Angeles. The
nightmare doesn't end there for Sherman, though. He is being remanded
to the custody of a halfway house where he will serve the remainder
of his sentence until August 2004. Starting now and continuing
through the next three years, Sherman will be serving an additional
sentence of federal probation, under which he will not be allowed to
use a cell phone, computer or other digital device unless designated
by the government. In addition, Sherman has been forbidden any
contact with 'anarchist groups,' who, the federal government
maintains, 'advocate violence as a means of disrupting order and
achieving social, economic and political change.'" (07/29/04)

Woman arrested for eating candy bar
    Fox News

"A government scientist finishing a candy bar on her way into a subway
station where eating is prohibited was arrested, handcuffed and
detained for three hours by transit police. Stephanie Willett said
she was eating a PayDay candy bar on an escalator descending into a
station July 16 when an officer warned her to finish it before
entering the station. Both Willett and police agree that she nodded
and put the last bit into her mouth before throwing the wrapper into
a trash can. Willett, a 45-year-old Environmental Protection Agency
scientist, told radio station WTOP that the officer then followed her
into the station, one of several in downtown Washington. 'Don't you
have some other crimes you have to take care of?' Willett said she
told the officer. Washington has been under heightened security
because of the continuing threat of terrorism. And last week, police
declared a citywide crime emergency over rising juvenile crime."

Gun owners emboldened by new laws
    Burke Connection

"The first-of-its-kind gun show in Northern Virginia is one of several
instances of muscle flexing by gun rights activists recently. In the
past few weeks, several members of the Virginia Citizens Defense
League, a pro-gun organization, have been openly carrying their
weapons in restaurants and Starbucks, which, in some cases, has led
other diners to call the police. ... Snyder's experience and a
similar one at a Starbucks store seem to have mobilized gun owners,
said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense
League. 'The incident that happened at Starbucks probably alerted a
whole lot of people to the concept of open carry,' he said. 'Some gun
owners looked at that incident and said, 'You know, I need to
exercise this right.''" (07/22/04)

How About That

Virginians now packing openly
    Fox News

"Some people are exercising their right to pack heat openly, baffling
police in Fairfax County, a Washington suburb. Police recently
received a 911 call from a restaurant in Reston. Six men were seated
at a table, the caller said. They were all armed. Dispatchers quickly
sent four officers to the restaurant. The officers were 'extremely
polite' and were hoping some of the men were in law enforcement, said
Sgt. Richard Perez, a spokesman for the police department. None was.
The men told the officers 'they were just exercising their rights as
citizens of the commonwealth,' Perez said. Packing a pistol in public
is legal in Virginia. And three times in the past month, residents
have been spotted out and about in the county, with guns strapped to
their hips. In the first episode, at a coffee shop, Fairfax police
wrongly confiscated weapons from two college students and charged
them with a misdemeanor. Police realized their mistake, returned the
guns and tore up the charges the next day." (07/15/04)

Airport victim gives TSA thugs something to look at
    Yahoo! News

"Daryl Miller didn't make it through airport security because he
couldn't keep his pants on. Airport police said a security screener
was waving a metal-detecting wand over Miller's pants area on Friday
when Miller pulled his shorts down to his ankles. He wasn't wearing
any underwear. Miller then said, 'There, how do you like your job,'
thus ending the screening, according to the police report. He was
charged with indecent exposure and released on $300 bail. 'We've
never had anybody do that before,' said airport police Lt. Matt
Christenson. 'But it's not abnormal for people to become frustrated
with the screening process.' Miller also became belligerent during
the screening, Transportation Security Administration officers told
police. One TSA employee also told police that Miller had a note
inside a magazine in his bag with an expletive, and told a TSA
employee 'Oh yeah, it's for you" when asked who the note was directed
at.'" (07/14/04)

Unintended consequences: Cannabis found during Olympic torch relay
    Fox News

"Police uprooted thousands of cannabis plants on the island of Crete
after a tip from police who saw three fields of the crop as they
shadowed the Olympic torch relay in a helicopter, authorities said
Wednesday. Officers from a police narcotics unit have destroyed more
than 6,500 plants over the past three days, after the weekend
discovery. Crete's mountainous landscape with its deep ravines is
favored by cannabis growers, and police raids have increased in
recent years after the deployment of police helicopters on the
island. The Olympic flame is on a tour of Greece after returning from
a global relay." (07/14/04)

Bush prevails; Patriot Act reform defeated
    Dodge Cirty Daily Globe

"The Republican-led House bowed to a White House veto threat Thursday
and stood by the USA Patriot Act, defeating an effort to block the
part of the anti-terrorism law that helps the government investigate
people's reading habits. The effort to defy Bush and bridle the law's
powers lost by 210-210, with a majority needed to prevail. The
amendment appeared on its way to victory as the roll call's normal
15-minute time limit expired, but GOP leaders kept the vote open for
23 more minutes as they persuaded about 10 Republicans who initially
supported the provision to change their votes." (07/08/04)

Gun groups fight rifle ban in court
    Oakland Tribune

"Gun-rights supporters filed legal papers in federal court Tuesday
seeking to block Contra Costa County from enforcing its ban on the
sale of .50-caliber rifles. Attorneys representing a coalition of gun
enthusiasts, manufacturers, publishers and retailers will appear in
U.S. District Court in San Francisco on Aug. 12 requesting a
preliminary injunction. A month ago, the groups sued the county in
federal court, charging that the ordinance violates First Amendment
free speech rights and is preempted by state law. ... The lawsuit
argues that the county ordinance infringes on free speech by
effectively barring magazines and newsletters that happen to contain
advertisements for .50-caliber rifles." (07/07/04)

Is paid leave near for all US workers?
    Christian Science Monitor

"When Jessica Bartholow's son was born a year and a half ago, she
reluctantly returned to work when he was just 10 weeks old. Although
her employer provides four months of unpaid leave, she and her
husband needed her paycheck. Now, as the couple await the birth of
their second child, Mrs. Bartholow looks forward to staying home for
the full four months. The difference this time? A pioneering paid
family-leave program in California that allows workers to collect
partial wages for six weeks, up to a maximum of $728 a week. Funds
come from employee contributions to the state's disability insurance

Oregon ponders new pot law
    Fox News

"An Oregon ballot measure expected to qualify this week would make it
legal for medical marijuana users to possess one pound of pot, create
state dispensaries and allow nurse practitioners and naturopaths to
prescribe it. If passed, a patient could possess six pounds of
marijuana legally -- spread out, it would be enough to fill two
grocery carts. The medical marijuana law on the books there now
limits legal possession to three ounces. Backers of the initiative
say the current law isn't working for many of the 9,000 cardholders
because they're running out of cannabis before they can line up a new
supply." (07/07/04)

Lots of Anti-Freedom Stuff Going On--but some good unlawfullness too

Judge protects FBI from whistleblower's lawsuit
    Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"A federal judge threw out a lawsuit Tuesday by a whistle-blower who
alleged security lapses in the FBI's translator program, ruling that
her claims might expose government secrets that could damage national
security. U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said he was satisfied
with claims by Attorney General John Ashcroft and a senior FBI
official that the civil lawsuit by Sibel Edmonds could expose
intelligence-gathering methods and disrupt diplomatic relations with
foreign governments. The judge said he couldn't explain further
because his explanation itself would expose sensitive secrets."

Smoking away, despite the ban
    St. Petersburg Times

"The faithful brave the weather and pull into the parking lot of a red
concrete block building on the outskirts of Wildwood [FL], a
once-thriving railroad town off U.S. 301. Outside, smoke from the
pits at Buddy's Bar-B-Que drifts through the air, smelling of pecan
and blackjack oak. But inside, the smoke smells more like Marlboros
and menthols. A sign in the window reads, 'Smoking permitted,' and
the plastic jug by the cash register isn't for tips. Its message:
'Donations for smoking fine.' But Buddy's crown jewel -- the fixture
that has won it fame and irked state and local officials -- is the
10-foot-long, 5-foot-tall fiberglass pig attached to the roof. It
used to face U.S. 301, snout first. In a bold, if slightly bizarre,
act of civil disobedience, the restaurant's owners turned it around
last year so that the rump faces the road. They added an extra touch
-- a plastic pipe painted to look like a cigarette protruding from
its rear end." (07/05/04)

Appalachian pharmacies become fortresses
    ABC 7 News

"Ever since prescription painkillers such as OxyContin became the
drugs of choice among dealers and addicts in Appalachia, the days of
small-town pharmacists dispensing medicines from behind an ordinary

most sought-after drugs are stored in vaults. The pharmacists often
work behind safety glass, and some have even armed themselves.
Surveillance cameras and alarm systems monitor every spot. ...

came in handy when a man walked into the Family Pharmacy with a
shotgun under his long coat and demanded drugs. When Dunaway pulled

Vanderbilt studies how brain reacts to gambling
    Tennessean

"Research by a Vanderbilt University psychology professor might help
explain why gambling becomes a compulsion for some but remains a
hobby for others. The research also could lead to new treatments for
problem gambling and help answer long-standing questions about the
links between addiction and brain chemistry, said the professor,
David Zald. Using positron emission topography (PET), Zald said, he
and other researchers discovered that dopamine levels in our brains
increase the most when we're playing a game of chance in which the
possibility of winning money is uncertain, such as casino gambling or
playing the lottery. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role
in how we experience such pleasures as food and sex, as well as the
euphoria of drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine." (07/06/04)

Scalia scores court activism
Washington Times

"Justice Antonin Scalia ended the Supreme Court term with some harsh
words for his colleagues. 'This court seems incapable of admitting
that some matters -- any matters -- are none of its business,' he
wrote on the court's final day. Only fellow conservative Clarence
Thomas wrote more dissents than Justice Scalia in the nine-month term
that ended last week. In the final days, Justice Scalia complained
about a misguided court that 'seems to view it as its mission to Make
Everything Come Out Right,' even with wrong rulings. In some of his
sharpest criticism, Justice Scalia called the court irresponsible in
ruling that foreign terror suspects held in Cuba may challenge their
treatment in U.S. courts." (07/05/04)

>
> The problem is when you come back across the border. You still have to

>
> The penalty gets worse if you start bringing cartons into Michigan.

ACLU sues to block teen-nudist law

"The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia [Tuesday] filed a

parents. The ACLU said it is seeking a preliminary injunction from
the court to prevent the state from blocking a teen nudist camp
planned for July 24 to 31 at Camp White Tail Park, a nudist resort in
Ivor in southeastern Virginia. The group said the law infringes on
the constitutional rights of the teens and their parents. Earlier
this year, the General Assembly overwhelmingly passed the law that
says teens can attend a nudist camp only if a parent, grandparent or
legal guardian is present. The law is scheduled to go into effect
[today]." (06/30/04)
