Big Brother tries to muscle ISPs----------Wired News"The Bush administration asked a federal appeals court Friday to restore its ability to compel Internet service providers to turn over information about their customers or subscribers as part of its fight against terrorism. The legal filing with the 2nd Circuit U.S. Courtof Appeals in New York comes amid a debate in Congress over renewal of the Patriot Act and whether to expand the FBI's power to seek records without the approval of a judge or grand jury." Microsoft, HP partner on police state software InfoWorld"Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft are working together to offer governments national identity systems built on the .Net platform. The tech giants have been working on a code base that will allow them to offer a set of technology components for functions such as online and offline demographic and biometric data capture, regional verification and registration, and document lifecycle management. They unveiled their plan to target worldwide governments with the technologies at an event in Geneva on Friday. HP is bringing its hardware and consulting services to the table, while Microsoft is supplying software products such as its Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and BizTalk Server 2004. The companies are tapping partners in the security market, such as biometric technology vendors and public key infrastructure (PKI) providers, to offer specific national identity systems." (05/27/05)
Signs of drug-war shift Christian Science Monitor"Evidence is beginning to build that the approach to the war on drugs in the United States could be changing -- by shifting attention away from small-time drug dealers and individual users toward major drug traffickers. The nation's drug czar has alluded to changes in thinking. 'Break the business,' said John Walters at a congressional hearing earlier this year. 'Don't break generation after generation [of poor, minority young men], is what we're going for.' Another sign of a shift involves the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program, which since 1988 has earmarked federal money for local communities to use in the war on drugs. ... President Bush is proposing the elimination of the program by next year -- though this budget cut is still being fought in Congress." [editor's note: This is supposed to be good news? 2:00pm 05/24/05 Signs of soft-patch did not trouble FOMC: May 3 minutes By Greg RobbWASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Fed officials were not troubled by indicators released in April that suggested the economy was slowing, according to the minutes of the May 3 meeting released on Tuesday. Most members viewed the weaker data as "transitory." Only a few FOMC members thought that the Fed's seven straight rate hikes since June 2004 might be impacting growth unexpectedly. The minutes suggest that inflation remained the paramount concern for the central bankers. Many FOMC members viewed the risks to the inflation outlook as "skewed somewhat to the upside." Once again, some Fed officials objected to the language in the post-meeting statement that rates could be increased at a "measured" pace. They argued that such forward-looking language would limit the Fed's flexibility. But the majority rejected this view, insisting that "measured" did not preclude either a pause in the steady pace of rate hikes or an increase the size of the rate hikes to a half a percentage point. Stroke a chicken over the internet"Scientists have developed a system which enables people to stroke a chicken over the internet. It's seen as the first step to virtual physical interaction, reports Wired News. The Touchy Internet system was created by researchers at the National University of Singapore. Users touch a chicken-shaped doll which duplicates the actions of a real chicken through a webcam link. Touch sensors on the doll send 'tactile information' over the internet to a second computer near the chicken. This computer triggers tiny vibration motors in a lightweight jacket worn by the chicken, meaning the chicken feels the user's touch in the exact same place as the doll was stroked. 'This is the first human-poultry interaction system ever developed,' said Professor Adrian David Cheok who has been developing the technology for nearly two years." [editor's note: Stroking chickens? http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1402057.html Vitamin D research turning sunscreen wisdom on head"Scientists are excited about a vitamin again. But unlike fads that sizzled and fizzled, the evidence this time is strong and keeps growing. If it bears out, it will challenge one of medicine's most fundamental beliefs: that people need to coat themselves with sunscreen whenever they're in the sun. Doing that may actually contribute to far more cancer deaths than it prevents, sme researchers think. The vitamin is D, nicknamed the 'sunshine vitamin' because the skin makes it from ultraviolet rays. Because sunscreen blocks vitamin D's production, some scientists are questioning the long-standing advice to always use it. The reason is that vitamin D increasingly seems important for preventing and even treating many types of cancer. ... [F]our separate studies [have] found it helped protect against lymphoma and cancers of the prostate, lung and, ironically, the skin. The strongest evidence is for colon cancer." Robert Dreyfuss, contributing editor to The Nation and Mother Jones, calls it 'a step toward a chilling, privacy-violating national ID card system that could one day have Americans being asked, Nazi-style, to 'show us your papers' wherever they go.' That's not so far-fetched, says Jeff Weaver, chief of staff for Rep. Bernie Sanders, one of only 58 House members to turn thumbs down on the measure. 'There is a real concern on a lot of people's part that this is the first step toward a national ID card,' said Weaver. 'To the extent that you create a federally mandated standardized driver's license process, you are certainly moving in that direction.'" Drug Czar misled press on teen's suicide, marijuana Marijuana Policy Project"The parents of a teen suicide victim -- presented to the national media ... as having been driven to suicide by his marijuana use -- have revealed that their son actually tested negative for marijuana and positive for alcohol at the time of his death. ... In a May 3 press conference sponsored by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Drug Czar John Walters touted 'growing and compelling evidence ... that regular marijuana use can contribute to depression, suicidal thoughts and schizophrenia.' One example presented to the media was Christopher Skaggs, whose parents spoke. Mrs. Skaggs described how her 15-year-old son was caught smoking marijuana in January 2004 and committed suicide seven months later. ... But later that week, Mr. and Mrs. Skaggs ... revealed that toxicology tests ... found 'nothing in his system but alcohol at that time.'" (05/12/05)
National ID battle continues Wired News"Legislation supporting a standardized national driver's license may have won unanimous approval in the Senate on Tuesday, but the bill's apparently smooth passage left some jagged edges in its wake. The Real ID Act appeared in take-it-or-leave-it spending legislation, which effectively forced lawmakers to sign on to the whole measure even if they disagreed with a portion of it. Several Republican and Democrat senators who cast favorable votes for the bill simultaneously railed against the provision authorizing the new driver's license rules. They're not the only ones refusing to accept the bill peacefully. The National Governors Association is threatening lawsuits to fight the legislation. And some states are threatening to ignore the legislation because they say it will cost up to $700 million for states to comply and will place a heavy burden on Department of Motor Vehicles workers."
